The meanings of "crown," "royal" and "athlete" the same as in English.
The new Crown series featured distinct and dynamic styling. While using the same platform as its predecessor, the Crown completely renewed its external design, including the mask with the upper and lower grilles connected in the shape of a crown. The Crown Athlete was styled in such a way as to evoke a sense of speed.
The 3-liter engine was dropped from the lineup, leaving only a 2.5-liter engine (4GR-FSE) and a 3.5-liter engine (2GR-FSE). The latter was available exclusively with the Crown Athlete series. The Super ECT system for 3.5-liter models was upgraded from 6 speeds to 8 speeds, and came equipped with paddle shifters.
The new Crown series offered a number of safety features that were firsts for Toyota. These included the Pre-collision System to avoid or mitigate collision damage, the Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) for preventing collisions in parking lots due to pedal misapplication, the Drive-start Control (DSC) for mitigating collision damage due to irregular gear-stick operation and sudden acceleration, and the Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) for ensuring high forward nighttime visibility while monitoring oncoming vehicles and partially blocking the headlight to reduce the glare inflicted on other drivers. Availability of these features depended on model grades.
Television commercials for the 14th-generation Crown caught the attention of the public. They featured celebrities such as Beat Takeshi and Jean Reno, and the pink Crown Athlete also made quite an impression. These commercials were also skillfully merged with the "ReBORN" corporate ad campaign that started in 2010.
