The lackluster sales of the large Model DA bonnet-type truck, coupled with the emerging trend in urban transportation to favor medium-sized and small trucks over larger ones, prompted Toyota to develop this medium-sized cab-over-engine truck with a payload capacity of four tons, which was released in October 1963.

Using the chassis of the bonnet-type Model FC80 medium-sized truck, the Model DC80C came equipped with an inline 6-cylinder 5.9-liter 110 hp diesel engine (Type D), a tilt-cab mechanism, and a 4,270 mm-long bed. Although the DC80C enjoyed enormous popularity when it was first released, sales quickly dwindled due to drivetrain and chassis problems and the emergence of competitors.
