Led by our expertise in automobile manufacturing and Toyota's strong desire to pursue new challenges, we are venturing out to new opportunities in the business arena.
At one point in time, automobile manufacturing was just another new business offshoot of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. The visionary founder of the company, Kiichiro Toyoda, strongly believed in the coming age of the automobile. It is no exaggeration to say his resolute pursuit of that dream helped build the Toyota we know today.
We now find ourselves in a time of economic maturity. The development of new businesses has become one of the most important tasks for corporations seeking to maintain growth. For some time, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has been venturing beyond automobile manufacturing and extending into fields like housing, finances and communications. In 1989, the Business Development Division was formed to promote continuous progress.
Toyota began by using its manufacturing technology to enter growing fields related to automobiles. Then, as demand increased for new personal mobility technology, TMC entered the marine and aerospace fields. Now, Toyota is focusing its efforts on business opportunities that are expected to experience rapid growth in the 21st century, such as biotechnology and afforestation, environment and energy and high-tech fields.
The technology created and handed down by our predecessors coupled with the strong desire to pursue new challenges drives Toyota to develop new businesses that can respond quickly to the needs of society and the environment. This is how Toyota makes contributions to today's world.
