The combination of a wheel and motor produces exciting driving with a new sensation.

The Toyota i-ROAD electric vehicle uses in-wheel motors installed in the wheels. A high-density and slim package incorporating a reduction gear, motor, and brake is installed in the 16-inch front wheels on both the left and right sides. The motors directly drive the wheels, and each can produce optimal torque. Each front wheel has a large vertical stroke of more than 300 mm, enabling the entire vehicle to lean far over like a motorcycle while cornering, a process called “active lean,” one of the distinctive features of the i-ROAD ride. These units also make it possible to provide adequate foot space with a slim width of just 870 mm, comparable to that of a motorcycle.

Slim air cooling unit makes ultra-compact body possible.

The inverter converts DC supplied by the battery to AC to turn the motors and to use in the generator, and optimally controls the motors. Conversely, it converts AC generated by the electric motors and the generator into DC to recharge the battery. The i-ROAD employs a slim, under-floor air cooling unit that draws in air from the front of the vehicle, making a compact body possible while providing ample interior space.
