Environment Improvement Projects Utilizing Toyota's Unique Expertise

In 2001, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn.Bhd.(UMWT) in Malaysia launched the Toyota Eco Youth program for junior high schools near the company's headquarters. Currently, teams from 16 selected junior high schools from around the country take part in the program each year. Each team (composed of 8 students and 2 teachers), working under the guidance of their respective teachers, plans and implements environmental improvement projects such as electricity conservation and wastewater treatment at school buildings and other facilities in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Environment.

In addition, there has also been significant interest from neighboring countries about the unique measures within this environmental education program and its significance, leading PT.Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) and PT.Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) to inaugurate its own Toyota Eco Youth program for high school students in 2005 in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment in Indonesia. Starting with the Toyota Eco Youth 4th program, TMMIN/TAM began to focus more on building Model Schools for Environmental Learning across Indonesia by conducting Sustainability Contests, in which previous winners compete to develop sustainable environmental improvement programs at school. The contests also encourage development and use of environmentally friendly technology (Green Sound Technology) by participating schools. From the 6th program, these Model Schools, which performed well at the Sustainability Contests, started to serve as learning and implementation centers for environmental knowledge in the surrounding communities.

Through these programs, both companies have increased environmental awareness in over 8,000 students and teachers in Malaysia, and more than 260,000 students in Indonesia. The programs have also been highly praised by both the Malaysian and Indonesian governments for their educational value.
