Toyota de Venezuela, C.A. (TDV)
As part of its Social Responsibility Program, TDV launched the "Pinta Tu Escuela" (Paint Your School) program in 2005. The original idea was to support improve schools by painting the building. However, after learning the actual needs of the schools, TDV realized the need to go beyond that and do more than that. For the first school, Unidad Educativa Republica de Argentina, TDV restored part of the school building.
The Unidad Educativa Republica "Laguna Chica" is the second "Pinta Tu Escuela" elementary school. TDV's Social Responsibility Committee members visited many schools in Sucre state to learn about the problems and conditions of the schools and decided which school needed their support the most. While there were many elementary schools seeking assistance, the children of Laguna Chica did not have a school building in good way and the children were attending classes in a bar saloon. Considering the dramatic overall situation, TDV decided to build a new school in Laguna Chica community and give 70 pre-school to sixth grade children materials and classrooms.
When TDV first stepped up and promised the local community that a school was going to be built, there was a lot of skepticism since a school had been promised before but never materialized. However, when the local community saw that TDV had serious intentions to build an elementary school, a synergy and trust between TDV and the townspeople evolved. At the opening ceremony of the school building in Laguna Chica community on December 9, 2008, Ms. Luisa Ferrer, school director, expressed her gratitude by saying "We only thought it was a dream. Now we know that our dreams do come true."
