Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS)
Teenaged drivers account for 13.6% of the fatal traffic accidents in the United States, thought they account for only 6.3% of the licensed drivers. TMS (Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A.) has developed the "Toyota Driving Expectations" program and the goal of program is to proactively take America's driving youth through a safe driving experience. The 4 hour dynamic course does more than inform, it takes teens the next step beyond driver's education and introduces "real world" obstacles, conditions and distractions in a safe and controlled driving environment.
Another unique feature of the program is the inclusion of the parents, which allows them to gain valuable insight into the challenges facing teen drivers today. At the program's closing session, the parents and teens are reunited to discuss what they learned and sign a parent/teen agreement on future safe driving practices.
Building upon the success of the behind-the-wheel experience, Toyota Driving Expectations expanded its outreach in 2011 by offering high school assemblies and dealership safety clinics.Since the official launch in 2004, nearly 30,000 parents and teens have participated in one of the three road safety programs by the end of 2012. The National Safety Council, a leading resource on advancing safety, has been a partner since the program's beginning.
