Necessity to collect CFC/HFC

Protection of the ozone layer and prevention of global warming has been an important issue of the global environment issues in the recent years. It is important to collect CFC/HFC (Chlorofluorocarbon / Hydrofluorocarbon) that is used as refrigerant of a car air conditioner and to reduce emission of CFC/HFC into the air, which is a cause of global warming.

(1) Destruction of the ozone layer (CFC-12)

Decrease of ozone caused by destruction of the ozone layer increases the volume of ultraviolet rays that reach to the earth and it is concerned to affect human health of people leading to increase of skin cancer and eye cataract as well as concerned about effect to the biogeocenosis such as disruption of animal and plant growth.

(2) Global warming (CFC-12, HFC-134a)

Greenhouse gas in the air passes the sunlight, but absorbs infrared rays radiated from the ground. As the greenhouse gas increases, the absorption volume of infrared rays increases as well and the air temperature will be raised further, which will lead to climate changes and affect the biogeocenosis.

Collection work

(1) Confirmation of CFC/HFC kind

Two kinds of CFC, R12 (CFC-12) and R134a (HFC-134a) are used for car air conditioners.

(2) Efficient collection

Acceleration of CFC/HFC vaporization is necessary to reduce the collection time. Increase of atmospheric temperature of the air conditioning system (the parts in which liquid CFC/HFC is kept such as a compressor, condenser and receiver) is effective for that purpose.

  • If the engine runs, then warm the air conditioning system up with engine (though switching off the air conditioner).
  • Being disadvantage for collection of CFC/HFC under low air temperature like in winter, keep the car warmest possible. In summer, keep the car under hot air to increase the car temperature.
