The late 1950s and early 1960s was a time of full-fledged development of export markets for the Japanese automobile industry. Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. reinforced its export divisions and made considerable efforts to develop overseas markets. In February 1960, the Export Department was divided into the Export Department 1 and 2 and was reorganized by market. In February 1962, the Export Headquarters was established. The Headquarters had five divisions responsible for five different destination markets-North America, Latin America, Far East, Asia/Oceania, and the Middle East/Africa-and each division was responsible for understanding its market and conducting exports. Personnel in the export divisions rapidly increased from 70 persons at the end of September 1961 to 162 persons in February 1962 when the Export Headquarters was established and further to 235 persons in September of that year.
