The second-generation Ipsum was introduced in May 2001, enlarging its body and engine from the first-generation model. As with its predecessor, front-engine, front-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive layouts were available. The new model carried a 2.4-liter engine (2AZ-FE) combined with a Super ECT transmission. Due to its larger body size and engine displacement, the second-generation Ipsum was classified in the "3 number" category. The interior became more spacious through the adoption of an original platform, and the underfloor luggage space behind the third-row seats was enlarged to 132 liters by moving the spare tire to beneath the first row seats. The second-generation Ipsum competed in the same class as the Honda Odyssey in Japan, and was also marketed in Europe as the Avensis Verso. Production ended in December 2009.
