The third-generation Toyoace was placed on the market in August 1971. Inheriting the predecessor's semi cab-over-engine styling, the third-generation design expanded the interior space for greater ride comfort, adopting a curved windshield and improving ventilation while reducing noise and vibration levels. A window washer system came standard-equipped on all models, together with other upgrades including improved brake performance and flush-mounted door handles.

The Toyoace initially came with either a 1.35- or 1.6-liter engine, and a 2.5-liter engine (2J) also became available in July 1972. The payload capacities ranged from 850 kg to 2,000 kg. The model variants included a standard low-floor bed model, a high-floor bed model with bottom-hinged gates on three sides, a double cab, a panel van, an aluminum van, and a refrigerated van. The "just low" model with small diameter double tires for the rear wheels also joined the lineup in August 1977.
