The fifth-generation Camry (counting the Celica Camry as the first generation) was introduced in July 1994. Reversing its predecessors' penchant for expensive upgrades, the new model was a simple medium-class saloon of good quality. The 2.5-liter V6 Prominent model was discontinued, and model variations were narrowed to choices of 4-door sedans and 4-cylinder engines. The wheelbase became 50 mm longer to 2,650 mm, allowing the cabin to extend forward and become more spacious. The sharply contoured body conformed to the Collision Impact Absorbing Structure (CIAS) standard, and featured a reduced drag coefficient of 0.30.

The engine options included 1,838 cc 125 PS (4S-FE) and 1,998 cc 140 PS (135 PS with the 4-wheel-drive [4WD] model) gasoline engines, and a newly developed 2,184 cc 91 PS turbo diesel engine (3C-T) that reduced smoke emission by means of the Diesel Smoke Control System (DSCS). The traction control system (TRC) was made available as an option with selected grade models. In January 1995, a turbo diesel model with ECT was added to the full-time 4WD line.
