The second-generation Carina was released in August 1977. Like its predecessor, the new model came in four body variations: 2-door and 4-door sedans, a 2-door hardtop, and a 4-door van. The exterior styling became more linear and clear-cut. The 4-door sedan version featured a boxy notchback design, and the van's rear quarter windows were replaced with larger, more conventional ones.

The available engines included a 1,600 cc unit (12T-U) conforming to the 1978 emission standards, as well as 1,800 cc (3T-U), 2,000 cc (18R-U), and 2,000 cc DOHC (18-GU) units that satisfied the 1976 standards, and a 1,600 cc DOHC (2T-GEU) with an electronic fuel injection system (EFI). The 2,000 cc unit (19R) employing Honda's CVCC technology was discontinued.

The 1,800 cc engine met the 1978 emission standards in October 1977, and the entire model lineup satisfied the standards by September 1978. In a minor model change in August 1979, the body was lengthened by 120 mm to give it a slant-nose style, and the four round headlamps were replaced with rectangular ones.

The 2-door sedan version was discontinued at the end of the second model generation.
