A southern constellation (the Keel).
The sedan and coupé versions adopted different front designs, with the former adopting four rectangular headlamps and the latter using two non-standardized-shaped headlamps. The Surf wagon shared the coupé's front design and sporty styling.
The engine lineup included 1.6-liter and 2-liter DOHC EFI units, a 1.8-liter OHV engine with a carburetor, a 1.8-liter SOHC EFI, a 1.5-liter SOHC, and a 1.6-liter OHV (available only for the van; it was replaced with a new 1.5-liter engine in May 1983). All models used a MacPherson strut front suspension and a 5-link rigid axle rear suspension, except for the EFI engine models which used an independent semi-trailing arm rear suspension. The ball and nut steering mechanism was replaced with rack and pinion steering to give more direct feedback to the driver. A 1.8-liter diesel engine was made available in February 1982, followed by a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder DOHC twin-cam engine (3T-GTEU) with a maximum output of 160 PS in September. The 1,600 cc 4-cylinder DOHC unit (2T-GEU) was replaced with a new-generation 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve version (4A-GEU) in May 1983. A minor model change took place in May 1984.
