The fourth-generation Carina 4-door sedan, launched in May 1984, shared the platform of the eighth-generation Corona that had already converted to the front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FF) layout in January 1983. Selected third-generation front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) models of Carina including sedan, coupé, the Surf wagon, and van were also continued with minor changes.

The new sedan's body length was shorter than that of the preceding FR models and the wheelbase was only slightly longer, yet the cabin became more spacious thanks to the FF layout. The transversely-mounted engine could be chosen from three gasoline engines, including a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder SOHC unit (3A-U), a lean-burn 1.6-liter unit (4A-ELU), and a 1.8-liter unit with the first variable intake mechanism for a production engine (1S-iLU), or a 2-liter diesel (2C-L). The transmission options included 4- and 5-speed manual systems and 3- and 4-speed automatic systems. In August 1985, 1.6-liter and 2-liter sports twin-cam engines (4A-GELU and 3S-GEU) were also made available, while two FR-layout models (GT and coupé) were discontinued.

In May 1988, three other FR models (sedan, Surf, and van) were discontinued.
