The Corolla liftback was added to the third-generation Corolla lineup as a new body variation in January 1976. The sporty 2-door wagon horizontally extended the roof of the fastback coupé to the rear and attached a large hatchback door. Its front design was distinct from that of the sedan and the hardtop. The folding rear seats provided larger luggage space as needed. Initially a 1.6-liter engine was the only choice available, to which a 1.2-liter engine was added in February 1976. When the Corolla Levin with a twin-cam engine (2T-GEU) modified to meet the emission standards rejoined the lineup in a minor model change in January 1977, the engine was also fitted to Corolla liftback's new GT model.

A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car.
