The Corolla Levin was fully remodeled with the release of the sixth-generation Corolla sedan, switching from the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive to front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The new Levin came in a 2-door notchback coupé body and featured fixed headlamps, whereas the sister model Trueno employed retractable headlamps.

The 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve engine was either naturally aspirated or supercharged. The latter (4A-GZ) produced 145 PS, which was further enhanced in May 1989 through an upgrade to a premium gasoline version. The suspension continued to use the 4-wheel independent MacPherson strut and coil spring system, although the design was fully renovated. The electronically controlled TEMS suspension was standard for the GT Apex model and optional for the GT model.

A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. "Levin" is a poetic word for "lightning."
