The third-generation Corolla FX was introduced in May 1992. While 3- and 5-door models were made available in Europe which was the principal market for the FX, only the 3-door model was offered in Japan. The utility-oriented designs of its predecessors gave way to a more sporty design with fastback styling. The choice of engines was narrowed to 1.6-liter units only, including a unit producing 115 PS for the basic model and a 20-valve 160 PS unit for the GT model. The 4-wheel MacPherson strut system was standard, while Super Strut front suspension (first adopted with the Celica) was optional for the GT model.

Reflecting the dwindling popularity of 2-box cars, domestic sales of the Corolla FX were discontinued at the remodeling in May 1995.

A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car. The FX subname was derived from the first and last letters of "FF 2-box."
