The sixth-generation Crown was placed on the market in September 1979, in a full model change after an interval of nearly five years. With this makeover, the 5-door van was diversified into five grades. The available engines included 2-liter (M-U) and 2,200 cc diesel (L) units, and the former offered Super Deluxe, Deluxe, and Standard grades, while the latter came in Deluxe and Standard grades. The transmission was either a 4-speed manual with overdrive and a column shifter, a 4- or 5-speed manual with a floor shifter, or a 4-speed automatic with overdrive and a floor shifter. The maximum payload capacity was 500 kg when carrying two or three passengers, or 400 kg with five or six passengers.
