This means a small star burning brightly.
The drivetrain configuration was either front-engine, front-wheel-drive or 4-wheel-drive. Toyota's passive safety measures were introduced even into this class of vehicles, and the Starlet came standard-equipped with an SRS airbag on the driver's seat and the anti-lock braking system (ABS). Available engines included a 1,331 cc "high-mecha" twin-cam 85 PS unit for both models, a 1,331 cc turbocharged 135 PS unit for the top-end Glanza V sport grade, and a 55 PS diesel for the Reflet model. GOA, Global Outstanding Assessment, was adopted to this Starlet for the first time. The transmission was either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.
In 1997, the Carat model was added to the existing two models, featuring the retrospective styling then in fashion.
With the introduction of the Vitz in August 1999, the production of the Starlet came to an end after a span of nearly a quarter century.
