The new 2-door coupé series joined the Corona lineup in 1985. It was a sister model of the Celica and the Carina ED that used the front-engine, front-wheel-drive Corona as the base model. Although the body design of the Corona coupé was similar to the Celica's, it was different in that the Corona coupé was a notchback rather than a hatchback. The Corona coupé's power unit lineup was initially the same as that of its siblings, consisting of a 2-liter DOHC (3S-GELU), a 1.8-liter SOHC (1S-iLU), and a 1.6-liter DOHC (4A-GELU), although a minor model change in 1987 saw the 1.6-liter engine replaced with a 2-liter unit (3S-FE).
Plant Tsutsumi plant, Tahara plant [from 1986]
The "corona" is the ring of pearly light around the sun. The name was apt for this robust and approachable family car.
