In May 1970, the Corolla and the Corolla Sprinter launched their second-generation models. At the same time, the Corolla Sprinter dropped the Corolla name and started the independent Toyota Sprinter line.

The 2-door coupé released in May 1970 was joined by a 4-door sedan in a minor model change in August 1971. The 4-door sedan featured a more sporty arrangement compared to the Corolla. Although the Sprinter and the Corolla were sister cars sharing the same platform, the styling was different. The Sprinter offered the Deluxe, Hi-Deluxe, and SL model grades, with a choice of single- or twin-carburetor 4-cylinder OHV engines using regular gasoline with a displacement of 1,200 cc or 1,400 cc. The transmission was either a 4- or 5-speed manual or a 2-speed automatic. A 1,600 cc model was added in April 1973.
