The fourth-generation Sprinter was released simultaneously with the Corolla in March 1979. The wheelbase and the front/rear treads were enlarged by 30 mm and 25/50 mm, respectively. The new body design featured sharper contours and expanded cabin space. The body types consisted of a 4-door sedan, a 2-door hardtop, a coupé, and a liftback. The Sprinter changed its front and rear designs from those of the Corolla. The rear suspension continued to be of a rigid axle type, although the semi-elliptical leaf spring was replaced with 4-link coil springs with a lateral rod, thus significantly improving ride comfort and stability. All models came standard-equipped with front-wheel disc brakes (GT models came with 4-wheel disc brakes), and the 1300 models adopted a rack-and-pinion steering system. The available engines included 1,300 cc (4K-U), 1,500 cc (3A-U), and 1,600 cc DOHC (2TG-EU) units. The 1,800 cc engine that joined the lineup in August 1979 was discontinued two years later, and was revived again in February 1982.
