The meaning of "sprinter" is the same as in English. "Trueno" is Spanish for "thunderclap."
The choice of engines included 1.5-liter (3A-U) and newly developed 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve (4A-GEU) units. At first the only available transmission was a 5-speed manual, to which an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic ECT-S transmission was added in May 1985. The suspension was a combination of MacPherson struts and 4-link coil springs with a lateral rod. Door mirrors were adopted from this model onward. The difference in the external appearance of the Sprinter Trueno and its sister car Corolla Levin was in the headlamps: the Levin's headlamps were fixed, while those of the Trueno were retractable. The Sprinter Trueno of this model generation was received particularly well among those who favored the road performance of FR cars, and was affectionately called by its vehicle code AE86 even after it went out of production.
