The sixth-generation Sprinter was released in May 1987.

The 5-door model changed its subname from liftback to Cielo. The mechanical components of the Sprinter were basically the same as those of the Corolla, with the engine lineup consisting of 1.3-liter (2E), 1.5-liter (5A-F), and 1.6-liter (4A-GEU) gasoline-powered units as well as a 1.8-liter diesel unit. All engines except the 1.3-liter and 1.8-liter diesel units came with the DOHC 16-valve mechanism. In October 1987, a full-time 4-wheel-drive version with a 1,600 cc engine (4A-F) was added to the sedan line. In May 1988, the SE Saloon EFI with an electronic fuel injection engine (5A-FE) and the SE Saloon with a 1,800 cc diesel engine joined the lineup, followed by the SE Saloon G in a minor model change in May 1989. In October 1989, a 4WD sedan with a 2,000 cc 73 PS diesel (2C-III) was introduced.
