The Sprinter Cielo was introduced as part of the sixth-generation Sprinter lineup, replacing the 5-door liftback. Although it followed the 5-door hatchback styling of its predecessor, the Cielo covered the rear pillars with extended window glass, making the rear cabin look more open and expansive -- hence the subname Cielo, which means "sky" in Spanish.

The mechanical components of the Sprinter Cielo were basically the same as those of the Corolla and the Sprinter sedan, with the difference that all engines available for the Cielo came with the DOHC mechanism. Although the rest of the Sprinter models evolved into the seventh generation in a full model change in June 1991, the Cielo was not renewed and was discontinued at the end of the model generation.

Due to the enduring popularity of the Corolla liftback in Europe, however, the Sprinter Cielo continued to be exported as the Corolla liftback. For this reason, the next-generation Sprinter Cielo was available in Europe (manufactured in the UK), even though it was never offered in the Japanese market.

The meaning of "sprinter" is the same as in English. "Cielo" is Spanish for "celestial" or "heavenly."
