The meaning of "sprinter" is the same as in English. "Carib" is meant as an abbreviation of "caribou" (reindeer).
Using the eighth-generation Corolla/Sprinter that came out in May 1995 as the base, the Carib became 40 mm wider and 20 mm higher than the previous model, expanding the cabin and luggage space. It inherited some design features that had distinguished the first-generation model onward, including the vertical combination tail lamps and uniquely shaped rear quarter windows, to preserve the model identity. In addition to the "high-mecha" twin-cam 1,600 cc 115 PS engine which was shared with the Corolla and Sprinter sedans, the Carib also offered a 1,800 cc 120 PS engine. The transmission was either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The lineup started with a full-time 4-wheel-drive (4WD) model alone, which was joined by a front-engine, front-wheel-drive model in May 1996 with an option of a 1.6-liter sports twin-cam engine.
In April 1988, the Rosso model with the European-style front end design was added to the line. Due to the increasing number of 4WD passenger cars and SUVs, the Carib had been losing its unique position, until its production was discontinued in August 2002 at the end of the third model generation.
