The sixth-generation Celica adopted a newly designed platform with improved rigidity and reduced weight, further enhancing its sporty driving performance. The new platform was also shared with the Carina ED/Corona Exiv lines. The body types included a hatchback and a convertible (with bodywork executed by ASC), the latter becoming available in September 1994. The body width increased to 1,750 mm, which put the Celica into the "3 number" vehicle category.

The two available engines were both 2-liter DOHC 16-valve units, with either "high-mecha" or sports twin-cam mechanisms and producing 140 PS and 180 PS, respectively. The top-end model adopted the newly-developed super strut suspension, enabling sharp steering responses and steady road-holding performance that won high acclaim. In February 1994, 2,100 units of the WRC-homologated GT-Four were released specifically for the Japanese market.

With regard to the convertible, the hydraulic top of the preceding model was replaced with an electric-powered one. The storage space was made smaller to give more room to the rear cabin, which became as spacious as that of the coupé.
