The third-generation Chaser that came out in August 1984 dropped the 4-door sedan version, leaving the 4-door hardtop as the only available body type. The choice of gasoline engines included 2-liter inline 6-cylinder DOHC with an output of 160 PS/18.5 kgm (1G-GEU), 1G-EU, 2-liter turbocharged (M-TEU), and 1.8-liter 4-cylinder (1S-U) units. Also available were two 2.4-liter diesel engines, one naturally aspirated and the other turbocharged. The 5-speed manual transmission model equipped with the turbo diesel engine came with a flywheel with torsional damper. The 2000GT Twin Turbo with a DOHC twin-turbo engine (1G-GTEU) joined the model lineup in October 1985.
