"RAV4" is the acronym of Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel-drive. The "L" stands for "liberty."
Stimulated by the success of the RAV4, a succession of competitors entered the market from around the world, including the Honda CR-V, the Mitsubishi Pajero Io, and the Land Rover Freelander. The RAV4 added a 4-door model in April 1995 with the wheelbase extended by 210 mm, and a 2WD model in September 1997 for those who did not require the 4WD capability.
