The fifth-generation Mark II was released in August 1984. Starting with this generation, the model line was simply referred to as the Mark II, leaving out the Corona name.

The fifth-generation Mark II came in three body styles, including a 4-door hardtop, a 4-door sedan, and a wagon (released in November 1984). Because the previous models proved very popular due largely to the 4-door hardtop, the fifth-generation Mark II succeeded and refined the predecessor's styling. The sedan inherited the 6-light window design, and the hardtop featured the rear pillars covered with glossy black resin.

The engine lineup consisted of six units, including a 2-liter inline 6-cylinder DOHC (1G-GEU), its turbocharged version (M-TEU), a 2-liter 6-cylinder unit (1G-EU), a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder unit (1S-U), and two 2.4-liter diesel units (naturally aspirated or turbocharged). There were already as many as 31 model variations at this time, to which a DOHC twin-turbo engine was added in October 1985 and a 1.8-liter 4-door hardtop in December 1986.

The various meanings of "Mark" are the same as in English (target, grade, fame). "Corona Mark II" can be taken to mean that the car is both "the second-generation model" and "an upgraded version" of the Corona.
