The eighth-generation Mark II released in September 1996 featured relatively few mechanical changes from the previous model. Succeeding the division of the sporty Tourer and luxurious Grande lines created in the previous generation, the two 4-door hardtop lines came standard-equipped with safety features including the anti-lock braking system (ABS), dual front airbags, and side airbags.

The vehicle stability control (VSC) system was standard for the 3-liter model. All gasoline engines adopted an inline 6-cylinder DOHC 24-valve configuration, with variations including 2-liter 140 PS, 2.5-liter 180 PS, 2.5-liter turbocharged 280 PS, and 3-liter 220 PS units. The 2.5- and 3-liter units adopted the VVT-i technology to improve the torque in the practical revolution range and to boost fuel economy. The eighth-generation model replaced the previous twin-turbo engine with a single turbo version. A 2.4-liter 97 PS turbo diesel engine was also made available

The various meanings of "Mark" are the same as in English (target, grade, fame). "Corona Mark II" can be taken to mean that the car is both "the second-generation model" and "an upgraded version" of the Corona.
