Promoting Environmental Education

Eco-Schools is an environmental education program run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE),which helps schools become more sustainable. Approximately 11 million students from 37,900 schools in 50 countries are part of the Eco-Schools network. Joining with Eco-Schools in 2005, Toyota Motor Europe set up the Environment and Innovation International Competition through its Toyota Fund for Europe. This competition encourages students to design real solutions to today's environmental problems. Winning entries receive a grant which enables students to transform their ideas into action.

The 2010-2012 cycle theme was "Let's Reduce Waste". The winner of this cycle was the Preserje Pri Radomljah Primary school in Slovenia. The school was selected out of 92 participating schools which participated during this period. Their project addressed the theme by creating their very own composter. The composter was made out of recycled materials, but also included new technologies such as a solar panel to allow automatic tumbling of the composter. The composter is used to make compost out of waste food of the canteen, and the resulting compost is used at the school's garden.

In 2012, a new theme "Sustainable Mobility" was launched in three countries: Denmark, Slovenia and Turkey. This competition continues throughout 2014 linking schools with retailers to share best practices and find innovative ways of tackling environmental problems.
