The second-generation bB went on sale in December 2005. Its predecessor was introduced in February 2000 as a new genre of vehicle for younger generations, but proved very popular among customers of all ages due to its versatility. The second-generation model adopted the development theme of "A Car-shaped Music Player," seeking to embody the lifestyle of people who liked to be surrounded by music everywhere they went. With the latest audio system, interior lighting that flashed in rhythm to the music, and front seats with couch-like "laid-back" mode, the new bB's cabin was designed as a space for enjoying music. Using the platform of the Passo, the second-generation bB had virtually the same body dimensions as its predecessor's, except the wheelbase and the length which were longer by 40 mm. Unlike the first-generation model that appealed to all age groups, the new model featured more distinct styling aimed specifically at younger customers.

In addition to the predecessor's 1.3-liter engine, a 1.5-liter unit (3SZ-VE) was newly made available. In May 2006, its sister car Coo was released from Daihatsu, followed by another (DEX) from Subaru in November 2008.
