The Alphard Hybrid made its debut in July 2003 as the second hybrid minivan after the Estima Hybrid. The front-engine, front-wheel-drive model combined a 2,400 cc 131 PS inline 4-cylinder engine for hybrids (2AZ-FXE) with a Super CVT transmission. The 4-wheel-drive (4WD) model (E-Four) had an additional motor for driving the rear wheels. The fuel consumption was excellent at 17.2 km/L (10-15 mode) even with a 4WD model that weighed 2,000 kg.
