The iQ, classified as an A-segment car in Europe, debuted as one of the smallest cars in the market with body dimensions of 2,985 mm x 1,680 mm x 1,500 mm. While the iQ was put into a segment above minicars (or keijidosha) in Japan, its body length was shorter than that of most minicars by 400 mm or so, and could accommodate up to three adults and a child. Despite the ultra-small size, the iQ used high-quality material for the interior, including optional leather seats. A production model was first announced in the European market, followed by the release in Japan in November 2008. In addition to the standard 1-liter, 3-cylinder engine by Daihatsu (1KR-FE), a 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder 100 PS engine (1NR-FE) was made available for overseas models in August 2009. The domestic 1-liter model came with a Super CVT-i transmission, while the 1.3-liter model offered an optional 6-speed manual transmission.

The iQ won the 2008-2009 Car of the Year Japan.

The "i" stands for "individuality," and also brings to mind "innovation" and "intelligence." The "Q" stands for "quality," hints at the vehicle's "cubic" form, and is a "cue" for owners to move toward new values and lifestyles.
