The fourth-generation Carina released in May 1988 consisted entirely of front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FF) models, while the existing front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) models were discontinued. In addition to the FF 4-door sedan that had joined the Carina lineup earlier, the 5-door FF Surf (wagon) and van were also made available at this changeover.

Unlike the previous generation of the Surf and van which only came with a 1.8-liter engine, the new models offered an option for a 1.5-liter unit, to which a 2.0-liter diesel unit was added later on. The new generation Surf and van remained in production until 1992.
