The Corolla line started in October 1966 with just a 2-door sedan, to which a 2-door commercial van was added in May 1967. The payload capacity was 400 kg when carrying two passengers, or 200 kg with five passengers. The van came in two grades, Standard and Deluxe. The mechanical components, including the 4-cylinder 1,077 cc engine (Type K) and the 4-speed manual transmission with a floor shifter, were the same as those of the sedan.

The van enjoyed enormous popularity for its practicality, because it could be used for work on weekdays and for leisure on weekends. In September 1969, the engine was upgraded to the Type 3K with a 1,200 cc displacement.

A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car.
