At the full model change of the Corolla in May 1970, the Corolla van also entered the second generation. The drive mechanisms were the same as those of the sedan, while changing the front suspension to a MacPherson strut system with coil spring. A 4-door version was added to the body variation. The cabin space became the largest in class, and standard safety devices were also reinforced, including high-backed front seats with integrated headrests and 3-point seatbelts. The mechanical components including the 1,200 cc engine and 4-speed transmission were shared with the sedan, though an optional column shifter could be chosen with the van instead of a standard floor shifter.

A "corolla" is the ring of petals around the central part of a flower. The name was intended to evoke the image of a beautifully styled, eye-catching compact car.
