In January 1976, a sporty 2-door wagon was newly added to the Sprinter line as the liftback. The roofline of the 2-door coupé was extended horizontally toward the rear, where a large hatchback door was attached. The backrests of the rear seats could be folded flat to secure spacious luggage room. Only a 1.6-liter engine was available at first, though a 1.2-liter unit was offered a month later in February 1976. In a minor model change in January 1977, the liftback GT model was introduced, together with the Trueno that rejoined the lineup fitted with the 2T-GEU engine. Also added to the lineup was a hardtop, which was the same as the Corolla hardtop with the front design replaced with that of the Sprinter sedan. The available engines included 1.2- and 1.4-liter OHV units and a 1.6-liter unit (OHV or DOHC), with the options for single or twin carburetors and premium or regular fuel.

The 1.6-liter DOHC engine (2T-GEU) was also reintroduced at this time, after having been temporarily pulled from the market and modified to meet the 1976 emission standards.
