Chaser was a new model line launched through the Toyota Auto sales channel (today's Netz channel) in June 1977. It was a sister car of the third-generation Mark II. In contrast to the luxury-oriented and more widely appealing Mark II, the Chaser was positioned as a youthful yet high-grade personal sedan with a character. Accordingly, its front and rear designs were differentiated from those of the Mark II, and a unique choice of body colors was made available including yellow.

The Chaser came in either a 4-door sedan or a 2-door hardtop body, offering fewer variations than the Mark II. The engine lineup included inline 4-cylinder 1,800 cc (13T-U) and 2,000 cc (18R-U) units, an inline 6-cylinder 2,000 cc (M-U) unit, and its EFI version (M-EU). Initially only the M-EU engine satisfied the 1978 emission standards, although all other engines met the standards by March 1979. The front suspension was an independent MacPherson strut, and the standard rear suspension was a 4-link system, with some models adopting an independent semi-trailing arm system instead. The models with a 4-wheel independent suspension also came with 4-wheel disc brakes.
