The Chaser and the Mark II shared the platform with the Cresta, which had been released in April 1980 when the Toyota Vista channel was inaugurated. The sedan featured 6-light styling. The Chaser differed little from the Mark II as far as the hardtop model was concerned, except for its sportier front and rear designs. The difference was more marked with the sedan, however: the Mark II featured SAE-compliant rectangular four headlamps, whereas the Chaser adopted non-standard-shaped two headlamps to match its slant-nose styling. The Chaser's top-end model Avante came with a 2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine (1G-EU), along with a reinforced suspension and Michelin tires. The sporty GT model was equipped with a 2-liter 4-cylinder DOHC unit (18R-GEU). Other engine choices included 2-liter 4-cylinder (21R-U) and 1.8-liter 4-cylinder (13T-U) units. A turbocharged unit (M-TEU) was added to the lineup in October 1981, and a 2-liter inline 6-cylinder 24-valve unit (1G-GEU), nicknamed the "twin-cam 24," was made available in August 1982.
