"Toyopet" : The Toyopet brand name was chosen in a public naming competition. The various meanings of "Mark" are the same as in English (target, grade, fame). "Corona Mark II" can be taken to mean that the car is both "the second-generation model" and "an upgraded version" of the Corona.
The GSS was equipped with a 1,858 cc inline 4-cylinder DOHC engine (10R), which was originally developed for this model in cooperation with Yamaha. The engine came with two twin-choke solex carburetors, producing 140 PS/6,400 rpm and 17.0 kgm/5,200 rpm. With a 5-speed gearbox, the GSS could develop a maximum speed of 200 km/h and a 0-400 m acceleration of 16.6 seconds (source: GSS brochure), which were among the best that any Japanese cars could perform at the time. To harness this power, the clutch and front wheel brakes as well as the drivetrain were reinforced, and a limited slip differential was added. Other equipment included bucket seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a large radial tachometer, matte black bullet-shaped fender mirrors, and black-painted wheels. Optional 4-point seatbelts and 165SR14 radial tires were also available. Although priced at 1,050,000 yen in Tokyo (about 200,000 yen higher than the 1900SL), the GSS was considered a bargain given its high performance. The GSS also performed well in races in the hands of a works team.
