"Toyopet" : The Toyopet brand name was chosen in a public naming competition. The various meanings of "Mark" are the same as in English (target, grade, fame). "Corona Mark II" can be taken to mean that the car is both "the second-generation model" and "an upgraded version" of the Corona.
The second-generation Corona Mark II offered, in addition to the models fitted with 4-cylinder engines, the L series that came with 6-cylinder engines. The L series extended the front of the 4-cylinder models to house a 2,000 cc inline 6-cylinder SOHC engine (Type M) for the Crown, while adopting original front and rear styling. The engines for the 4-cylinder models included a legacy 1.7-liter unit (6R) and a 2-liter unit (18R) that enlarged the displacement of the previous 1.9-liter engine.
The rigid axle leaf spring system of the rear suspension was replaced with a 4-link coil spring system with a lateral rod. The second-generation model also reduced emissions and boosted fuel economy. In October 1975, both 4- and 6-cylinder versions of the 2-liter engines excluding the 2000 DOHC (18R-G) met the 1975 emission standards, and the production of the GSS model that carried the 18R-G engine was discontinued. In June 1976, a 4-cylinder 2,000 cc engine (18R-U) satisfied the 1976 emission standards.
